5-6-15 lawmaker proposes students pass civics test to graduate

todayMay 6, 2015

The North Fond du lac school superintendent says his initial reaction is that requiring students pass a civics test to graduate from high school is unnecessary.  A proposed bill calls for students to pass the same civics test prospective U.S. citizens face to graduate.  North Fond du Lac superintendent and former social studies teacher Aaron Sadoff says everybody would agree that civics is very important.  But Sadoff questions the need for making students pass yet another test to earn a diploma.  “I think its very important that our students, our children even our adults understand what makes our country what it is and I think we do a very good job of covering that,”  Sadoff told WFDL news.   The bill’s author says Wisconsin high schools should instill responsibilities of citizenship.  Sadoff says that intimates it isn’t being done.  “What problem is that bill trying to fix?  I think that bill is another mantra about the assault on public education, look at what our kids aren’t learning, our kids are coming out uneducated,  and they aren’t,”  Sadoff said.  “Our public schools are better than they ever have been.”
