A Republican lawmaker from Markesan has been named to the Wisconsin Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board. Assembly speaker Robin Vos announced the appointment of State representative Joan Ballweg to the post. The board created in 1983 by the legislature to develop and fund strategies that prevent child maltreatment in Wisconsin. The board makes legislative recommendations in an effort to reduce child abuse and neglect and to improve coordination among state agencies.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
