The Fond du Lac city manager says a proposed budget significantly reduces the city’s debt and operating expenses are nearly flat. The city council will get its first review of the budget Wednesday night. It includes a 2.5 percent increase in the tax rate with a 4.6 percent levy increase. City manager Joe Moore says budget highlights include a new position in the police department to sift through electronic evidence that is gathered during a criminal investigation, a new mechanic position at the city garage, and $100,000 for a grant program designed to restore residential apartments back to single family homes. The budget earmarks $20,000 for a Lakeside Park master plan…but also includes a major expenditure of a half million dollars to complete a city-wide bike and hiking trail through Lakeside Park. Moore says Agnesian HealthCare is donating more than $200,000 for the bike trail project.
