10-15-15 night deer hunting

todayOctober 14, 2015

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A federal judge in Madison is allowing Wisconsin’s Chippewa tribes to hunt deer at night in part of northern Wisconsin.  The state has long banned hunting deer at night for safety reasons. The Chippewa, though, have pushed for years for a night hunt in part of northern Wisconsin the tribes ceded to the government in the 1800s. U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb ruled in 1991 that night deer hunting is dangerous and the state ban applies to the tribes.  A federal appeals court last year ordered Crabb to reconsider that decision after the Chippewa drew up new night hunting regulations.  Crabb issued an order Tuesday saying the tribes’ regulations are adequate. State Department of Natural Resources officials say the order means the tribal night hunt can proceed.
