Less than half of Wisconsin’s public school districts will receive more state aid this year than they did last year. The state Department of Public Instruction released the aid figures as required by law on Thursday. It reports that 44 percent, or 186, of the state’s 424 public school districts will see an aid increase. The total amount of money for school aid did not increase this year compared to last. The North Fond du Lac School District is receiving about $486,000 more or an increase of 6.26 percent. The Fond du Lac School District is seeing a nearly four percent drop with a loss of nearly $1.7 million in state aid. The Waupun School District is receiving $305,000 less and the Campbellsport School District is getting $353,000 more in state aid. Spooner saw the biggest percentage loss at 29 percent, followed by Norris at 26 percent. Milwaukee, the state’s largest school district, will see aid go up about .6 percent. Madison’s aid will drop 3.4 percent. Total aid amounts statewide will be reduced later by costs for choice and independent charter schools, and increased for categorical aids.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
