1-21-16 senate okays eliminating state treasurer

todayJanuary 21, 2016

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state Senate has approved a constitutional amendment eliminating Wisconsin’s all-but powerless treasurer position.  The amendment would eliminate the office in 2019. It must pass two consecutive legislative sessions as well as a statewide referendum before it can take effect.  The Assembly took the first vote on the amendment in October, passing it 63-33. The Senate passed it 20-13 Wednesday. Approval would mean the proposal would come back next session. If it passes both houses again it would go to the people for a vote.  Republicans who control the Legislature have slowly eliminated the treasurer’s duties over the years. The position’s only remaining responsibility is serving on the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands.
