3-14-16 berlin woman charged with stealing from school district

todayMarch 12, 2016

A Berlin woman faces embezzlement charges after being accused of stealing more than $30,000 from the Berlin Area School District. Berlin Police Chief Kevin Block says the investigation began in the summer of 2015 after auditors for the school district found money missing from some accounts at Clay Lamberton Elementary School in Berlin. Block says the employee who handled those accounts, later identified as 42-year-old Torry D. Putzke, was placed on administrative leave.   Once the investigation was complete, Putzke was interviewed by school administrators and ultimately fired.   Block says Putzke is charged with felony counts of Theft of a Business Setting in excess of $10,000 and Misconduct in Public Office. Putzke’s next court date is March 29th. Clay Lamberton Elementary School Superintendent Dr. Robert Eidahl says he’s disappointed with what happened, and says the school has significantly changed how money is handled following the incident.
