3-15-16 senate won’t consider handful of contentious bills

todayMarch 14, 2016

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Senate likely won’t take up bills that would outlaw so-called sanctuary cities for immigrants, increase compensation for the wrongly convicted and allow students to deduct debt from their income taxes.  The Senate released its calendar Monday for what’s expected to be its final session day Tuesday. It leaves off a series of bills with substantial price tags that had previously gained Assembly approval.  The calendar only includes three of 10 bills in a package designed to combat Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. It also leaves off one bill in Gov. Scott Walker’s college affordability package, which would have eliminated the cap on how much tax deductions students can claim for student loan debt.  A proposal that would strip repeat drunken drivers of their licenses also didn’t make the cut.
