Several area schools are among 178 schools statewide receiving Title One Schools of Recognition awards. The schools are being honored for success in educating students from low-income families. Area schools receiving awards include the Oakfield School District, Wilson Elementary In Beaver Dam, Waters and Chegwin Elementary Schools and Sabish Middle School in Fond du lac, Markesan Middle School, and the School for Ag and Environmental Studies in Fox Lake. All schools receive federal Title One funding to provide services to economically disadvantaged children.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
