The Wisconsin Department of Corrections says it is conducting an internal investigation following a WFDL news report that two prison wardens broke DNR rules by over-harvesting walleye on Lake Erie. Deputy warden at the Green Bay Correctional Institution Steve Schueler, Columbia prison warden, Mike Dittman and three retired former wardens and a sergeant were fined, received a ten day suspended jail sentence and all lose their fishing privileges in Ohio and Wisconsin for a year. Dodge Correctional Institution Sgt. Paul Neevel, who was also cited, is a limited-term employee, according to the DOC. The men were cited May 23rd for multiple trips…catching the walleye limit, leaving and coming back later in the day to catch more fish. A Department of Corrections spokesman says both Dittmann and Schueler reported the police contact as required by DOC policy and that DOC has initiated an internal investigation to determine if any work rules were violated. The spokesman says the investigation is a typical practice when an employee reports police contact.
