Fond du Lac resident Shawn Kahut says he knew they had a chance when he pulled in a seven and a half pound walleye early Sunday morning. Kahut and his partner, Brett Walser, of St. Cloud were in second place heading into Sunday. The team caught nearly 17 pounds of walleye Sunday and finished with more than 30 pounds to outdistance the second place finisher by more than eight pounds to win the 2017 Merc National Walleye Fishing tournament on Lake Winnebago. “Still setting in,” Walser told WFDL news. “We got second place once. I knew we could do it but I just never expected it to be there today. Dream come true.” Kahut says when he pulled in the big fish about a half hour after they started fishing Sunday morning he knew they had a shot to win. “We started jigging. After I pulled it I told him (Walser) we can do this,” Kahut told WFDL news. The winners take home a new boat and motor and $4000 cash.
