A Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy is in Florida assisting in relief and recovery efforts. Sheriff’s captain Ryan Waldschmidt says deputy Tom Van Buren was deployed with the Wisconsin Army National Guard for an indefinite amount of time…probably several weeks. “In law enforcement we’re used to, at the drop of a phone call, stopping what we’re doing to react to an emergency situation, but we have veterans here or active military members, as is the case with Tom, that upon a phone call get activated to go somewhere else and serve where the need is greatest,” Waldschmit told WFDL news. Waldschmidt says Van Buren was only recently hired and was still undergoing training before beginning his first shift as a patrol deputy. “We just hired him in May. He’s got about seven weeks of training in and so we put the training on hold so he can go serve the country down in Florida and we’ll pick up from where we left off when he gets back.”
