A Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s captain says a proposed ignition interlock bill may help deter drunken driving. The national president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving was joined by state lawmakers at a capitol news conference yesterday in support of a bill that would require ignition interlocks for all drunk driving offenders. Sheriff’s captain Ryan Waldschmidt says current law requires ignition interlocks for repeat offenders, those who refuse an alcohol test and for first-time offenders with a blood-alcohol content of .15 percent or greater. The proposal would require ignition interlocks for at least one year for all drunk driving offenses. According to MADD ignition interlocks have prevented drunk drivers from starting their vehicles over 37,000 times from December 2015 to December 2016. The group says license suspensions alone are often ignored.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
