The Fond du Lac County Law Enforcement Executive Association is recognizing a number of people for outstanding service in the line of duty. Several awards were handed out at a recent awards luncheon. Association president and Sheriff’s captain Ryan Waldschmidt says sheriff’s deputies Alex Volm and Derek Rehfeldt along with deputy district attorney Dennis Krueger received Officer of the Year awards for helping nab drug dealers after a vehicle was pulled over on Interstate 41. Three undercover Fond du Lac police officers and a Fond du Lac citizen were also recognized for their efforts in busting a meth lab. Sheriff’s sergeant Jeff Bonack and Waupun police officer Brett Gerritsen received the Life Saving Award for saving the life of a man who suffered a heart attack while driving his car. Highway Department workers Jim Guell, Dan Hornburg and Steve Reilly also received the Life Saving Award for their actions following a car crash.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
