The Fond du Lac city council has adopted a state law prohibiting social hosting of underage drinking parties. The city of Fond du Lac becomes the second municipality in the county to do that, following action last month by the North Fond du Lac Village Board. Council president Karen Merkel says social hosting needs to be taken seriously. Merkel says there are some parents who actually believe there is nothing wrong with underage kids drinking alcohol in their homes. The new law lowers the penalty from $1000 to $500 and police say that may actually make it easier for officers to enforce.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
