Republican U.S. Senator Ron Johnson doesn’t think the state’s voter ID law is the reason he was re-elected in 2016. On AM 1170s Between the Lines program Johnson was asked for his reaction to Attorney General Brad Schimel’s suggestion that Wisconsin’s voter ID law enabled Johnson to win re-election and President Donald Trump to capture the state in 2016. “I have no basis for confirming that or denying it. I did win by almost 100,000 votes and in general I think when people take a look at the possible fraudulent voting it doesn’t rise to that level,” Johnson told AM 1170 WFDL’s Between the Lines program. “I guess I kind of question that statement.” Governor Scott Walker says that Johnson worked “his tail off” on the campaign trail and made a “great connection” with voters. Wisconsin League of Women Voters director Erin Grunze says the number of people prevented from voting because of the law far outnumber those who were ever found guilty of voter fraud. “We didn’t have any problems prior to the photo ID law and then we passed a law because it could happen, but its so rare that it happened before that law. We do have numbers of people who have not been able to vote, have missed their opportunity to cast a ballot because of the photo ID.”
