Karen Merkel has been re-elected to another term as Fond du lac city council president. The council voted Merkel for president at their organizational meeting Tuesday night. Councilmember Catherine Block was elected vice president. Merkel, Kay Miller and newcomers Ben Giles and Donna Richards were sworn into office. Fond du Lac County Board chairman Marty Farrell has been re-elected to the post. Supervisor, Sam Kaufman was elected First Vice Chair and Marty Ryan was elected Second Vice Chair.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
