A new Fond du Lac County Sheriff is being sworn into office today. Ryan Waldschmidt ran unopposed in November after defeating an opponent in an August primary election. He replaces Mick Fink who is retiring after more than 37 years in law enforcement. Last month Waldschmidt named Kevin Galske to be his chief deputy. Fink was first elected Sheriff in 2006. Waldschmidt has been with the department since 1998, moving steadily up the ranks, and promoted to captain two years ago.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
