The Fond du Lac County Board will consider a resolution at their meeting next week to continue the countywide sales tax. The county finance committee is recommending the county terminate the scheduled sales tax sunset date of December 31, 2021. County executive Al Buechel says in addition to helping Mercury Marine and other industries, the sales tax has helped in other areas including highway maintenance. Buechel says without the sales tax the county would have to borrow money or road projects would not be done. A second resolution expresses the general intent for using the sales tax revenue for property tax relief. Buechel says its estimated that about a quarter of the sales tax revenue is generated from people outside of Fond du lac County. Last year the sales tax raised just under $8.4 million in Fond du Lac County.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
