MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republican lawmakers plan to intervene and hire their own attorneys at taxpayer expense to represent the Legislature in a lawsuit filed against the state by Planned Parenthood. Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said Wednesday it is necessary for them to intervene because of Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul’s “lengthy history of forwarding Planned Parenthood’s agenda.” Kaul is defending the state in the lawsuit, filed in January. He’s remained on the case, even as he joined a multi-state lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s attempts to set up obstacles for women seeking abortions. Kaul’s spokeswoman Gillian Drummond did not immediately return a message seeking comment. Republicans can intervene using powers the Legislature gave itself during a lame-duck legislative session in December.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
