The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office is introducing a new DNA technology to combat property theft. Sheriff Dale Schmidt says DNA for Property is a special forensic adhesive that can be applied to all types of valuables. The adhesive is swabbed on an item, that will chemically etch a unique alpha-numeric personal identification number that is registered in a national database. “Very simple and it sounds so complex. But we are putting a bunch of small microscopic dots on a piece of property to make it easily identifiable so we can make sure we are returning property to it’s rightful owner,” Schmidt told WFDL news. The DNA property kits will be offered free of charge through a partnership with the insurance industry. Schmidt says the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office is one of the first law enforcement agencies in the state to use the technology and will officially kick off the campaign in the next few weeks.
