10-8-19 substitute teacher shortage

todayOctober 8, 2019

The North Fond du Lac school superintendent says he’s not surprised that many school districts are struggling to find enough substitute teachers.  A spokesperson for the Wisconsin teacher’s union says the substitute teacher shortage is a huge problem in lower population areas in Wisconsin’s rural small towns.   North Fond du Lac superintendent Aaron Sadoff  the shortage is not something new.  “We have a shortage of substitute teachers all the time,”  Sadoff told WFDL news.   “This year we’re not noticing it any more than prior.   In general I think it’s just because of the economy, there’s people that are able to get different jobs and less people that want to get into substitute teaching.”   Sadoff says the North Fond du Lac School District has plenty of qualified substitutes.  The UW Madison School of Education reports the number of students enrolling to become teachers is down 35 percent nationally with some Wisconsin programs seeing even steeper declines.
