In conjunction with the annual sturgeon spearing season, the fifth annual Sturgeon Spectacular is being held this weekend in Fond du Lac. The event runs through Sunday in downtown Fond du Lac and on the shores of Lake Winnebago at Lakeside Park. Fond du Lac Festivals director Pete Wilke says a number of activities are being held including a snow sculpting competition in front of the Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts near downtown. Wilke admits he was a little nervous last Sunday when temperatures were in the 50s. Event organizers expect up to 25,000 people to attend the festival.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
