Republican state senator Dan Feyen of Fond du Lac says he doesn’t think the governor needed to extend the Safer at Home order by a month. Feyen says extending the order to May 26 was an overreaction by the governor. Feyen says businesses need a path to getting re-opened. “We were thinking we would be okay going to the end of the month,” Feyen told WFDL news. After the governor announced his plan for reopening on Monday Feyen issued another statement says it was “a step in the right direction.” “This has been a difficult time for many Wisconsinites, as we all struggle to deal with both the health and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Senator Feyen. “I am thankful to Governor Evers for finally showing our citizens a path towards reopening our economy and a light at the end of the tunnel.” Feyen suggests a more regional approach to reopening the state, depending on where the hot spots are. “If there is a major problem in the Milwaukee area, which is one of the hot spots, there is no reason a person who owns a business in Eagle River should be affected the same way down in Milwaukee County.” Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says critics of the decision to extend the order either don’t understand or aren’t considering the health consequences. “They’re not looking at that public health end of it,” Mueller told WFDL news. Mueller says there is a possibility the order could be lifted sooner if there is a drop in cases and if more testing and protective equipment becomes available. There are 65 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Fond du Lac County.
