MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Authorities say a rookie police officer has shot and wounded a woman in the Milwaukee suburb of Wauwatosa following an altercation. The shooting drew protesters in a city that has already seen civil unrest this year over policing. Officers responded after a caller reported the woman was violently attacking another woman with a stick Thursday night. Authorities say the woman began pounding on a 23-year-old female officer’s squad car with a wooden post. Police say the woman refused to comply with commands and advanced on the officer with the post, prompting the officer to open fire. The woman had surgery and is in stable condition. The officer has been on the department for nine months.
