Republican state representative Jeremy Thiesfeldt of Fond du Lac wonders why the state Supreme Court has not ruled on a case that could settle the issue over whether the governor has the authority to issue a statewide mask mandate. On Thursday Governor Tony Evers issued a new statewide mask order an hour after the Republican controlled legislature voted to repeal his previous mandate. Republicans who voted to repeal the order say Evers has exceeded his authority by issuing new public health emergencies rather than having the Legislature approve extensions. Thiesfeldt says the Wisconsin Supreme Court needs to decide the case now. “It is past time for the Supreme Court to act and bring clarity to the people of Wisconsin on this important issue,” Thiesfeldt said. Evers said his priority is keeping people safe and that wearing a mask is the most basic way to do that.
