8-25-15 state prison officials relax solitary confinement policies

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin prison officials have quietly relaxed solitary confinement policies over the past year. According to a Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism report produced using documents obtained through an open records request and a lawsuit, the Department of Corrections no longer uses solitary confinement to punish prisoners who commit minor rule infractions. Prison officials also now negotiate with inmates over the proper punishment for such offenses.

8-25-15 transgender prison inmate suing state

MILWAUKEE (AP) — A transgender Wisconsin prison inmate is suing officials, saying they are violating her rights by not allowing her to live as a woman. Dominique Gulley was sentenced to 11 years in prison after stealing a car in 2010. Gulley says officials won't allow her to continue the hormone treatments that she began six years before going to prison.

8-25-15 dnr trying to grow new elk herd in northern wi

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has released nearly two dozen elk into the Jackson County woods in an effort to grow a second herd in the state. Wisconsin has had only one elk herd, which roams Ashland County. The DNR wants to bring in 150 Kentucky elk to bolster the northern herd and create a Jackson County herd.

8-25-15 congresswoman moore says walker’s policies hurting african americans

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Democratic U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore says that Republican Gov. Scott Walker's policies are "tightening the noose, literally, around African Americans." Moore is black and represents Milwaukee in Congress. She says Walker's opposition to raising the minimum wage, requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls, and requiring drug testing for public aid recipients disproportionately hurts African Americans. Walker's campaign spokeswoman AshLee Strong had no comment.
