5-11-15 owl dies from bird flu in wisconsin

MILWAUKEE (AP) — An owl found dead in northeastern Wisconsin is the first wild bird in the state to test positive for a bird flu strain that has swept through poultry farms in the Midwest.  The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the snowy owl died from the H5N2 virus, the same strain that has hit 10 farms in Wisconsin, affecting nearly 1.8 million chickens and turkeys in the state. A Republican lawmaker from Markesan has been named to the Wisconsin Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board.  Assembly speaker Robin Vos announced the appointment of State representative Joan Ballweg to the post.  The board created in 1983 by the legislature to develop and fund strategies that prevent child maltreatment in Wisconsin. Scott Walker has abruptly scrapped plans to merge his flagship job creation agency with an agency that hands out low-interest housing loans in the wake of a scathing audit.  Walker's state budget calls for merging the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation with the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Agency. Fond du Lac based Wells Manufacturing has been sold to a Japanese company.  Wells was sold to NGK NCT Spark Plug Co. for $257. 5 million.  Wells has been in Fond du Lac since 1902 and a Wells spokesman says the company will remain in Fond du lac.  The company employs more than 600 people including 250 at Wells Vehicle Electronics on West Rolling Meadows Drive.  NGK Spark Plug Co., […]
