MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Tony Evers says Wisconsin National Guard troops will help fill staffing shortages at skilled nursing facilities over the coming weeks in hopes of opening up more beds and relieving pressure on hospitals. A record number of COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Fond du Lac County Thursday.  Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says there were 540 positive cases on Thursday.  She says part of the reason may be because of a backlog in the electronic reporting system the county uses. All 72 Wisconsin counties are reporting critically high COVID-19 levels, fueled by the highly contagious Omicron variant.
